I moved from the US in 2016 as I didn’t like the way politics were moving. First, I lived in Mexico City (absolutely amazing, vibrant, cultured, buzzy, exhilarating), then after a year I moved to San Andres Tololtepec and lived on the side of a mountain in the middle of nowhere for another year (not recommended), then Acapulco, where I’ve been living for ten months now. I moved here because I missed the ocean (16 years of living in Venice Beach will do that to you!), and because there’s just something about Acapulco, it is breathtakingly beautiful, it has such incredible heart, and no matter how many times it’s beaten down it just gets right back up and at it again, it refuses to be subjugated — I guess I resonated with that in some way, being a 49-year-old woman, ha. Acapulco really kicks your ass though, the daily grind of poverty is tough, the humidity and heat are brutal, and the scorpions, stinging ants, and mosquitos are relentless. I was stung by a yellow scorpion and suffered a psychotic episode reminiscent of poor Britney Spears with the umbrella. I have no regrets about moving here though, there’s just something about Acapulco. The article by Tom Parker-Bowles I’ve linked to below sums it up perfectly, if you find yourself with a spare five minutes it is definitely worth the time to read, it’s beautiful.
